What Is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person's physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. You don't need any artistic skill or experience — the focus is never on creating a "good" piece of art, but on using the creative process as a tool for self-expression, insight, and healing.

Art therapy is grounded in the understanding that the creative process is inherently healing, and that self-expression in art can help people resolve conflicts, develop interpersonal skills, reduce stress, increase self-esteem, and achieve insight.

Services Offered

Individual Therapy — Children (Ages 5–12)

Art therapy is especially powerful for children, who often lack the vocabulary to express complex emotions. Through drawing, painting, clay, collage, and other media, children can safely explore and process:

  • Anxiety and worry
  • Big emotions and emotional regulation
  • Grief and loss
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Social challenges
  • Trauma and difficult experiences
  • Family transitions (divorce, moves, new siblings)

Individual Therapy — Teens (Ages 13–18)

The teenage years bring unique challenges. Art therapy gives teens a non-judgmental space to explore identity, manage stress, and build resilience. Areas of focus include:

  • Anxiety, depression, and mood
  • Identity and self-discovery
  • Peer relationships and social dynamics
  • Academic and performance stress
  • Grief and loss
  • Life transitions

Adult Therapy

Family art therapy invites all members of the family to create together and alongside each other, building connection and communication in a unique, creative way. Family therapy can help with:

  • Improving communication and connection
  • Navigating conflict
  • Processing shared grief or trauma
  • Adjusting to family changes
  • Strengthening parent-child relationships
